Goodbye .com…Hello dotYou

AdWeek outlined the new ICANN regulation to open up the Top-Level Domains (TLDs) to new extensions in an article titled, “New Website Names to Get a Lot More Customized Goodbye .com, hello .adweek.” As the article reads, “Forget .com or .net—extensions for cities (think .berlin), brands (.canon has already applied), and other various places, companies, and things could become the norm. Need a buzz? Try iwant.beer. Hungry? Check out whatsfor.dinner.” – the possibilities will provide more options and will prevent possible cybersquatting.

Ushering in the End of Cybersquatting?

Will the era of new generic Top Level Domains put an end to cybersquatting? That’s the premise put forth by Corporate Image and Global Naming expert, Naseem Javed , who contends in this Circle ID post that brands will no longer need to  register multiple domain name combinations to surround a master brand identity as protection against unscrupulous squatters. Given the investment necessary to secure a Top Level Domain, Javed points out that monetization and ROI would be hard to achieve for even the most enterprising interloper.
